Beyond the Brands Everybody Recognizes
Almost all the press in this category goes to five apps: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. They are the fixed point here, and they are not being reviewed again. Most people misjudge the layer below them, which is deeper than it looks. It also includes at least one short drama app that beats all five on downloads. I read the App Store and Google Play listings for every name below on September 23, 2026. A marketing team cannot inflate publisher names, launch dates or install good short movies tallies, which is why those unglamorous entries matter. Where the two stores disagree, I give both. Any statement that goes around without a primary source gets flagged as unverified here.
The Second Tier on One Screen
Two notes on the table columns first. Google Play reports installs in buckets, so 10M+ and 100M+ are bands rather than tallies, and an app at the bottom of a band can be far smaller than one at the top. Launch dates here come out of the store pages, which often log the iOS and Android releases weeks apart. Where a cell says not reported, the figure was not in the listings or the printed data I went through. That blank is real rather than careless, since an iOS-only app has no Google Play number to give. All seven serve up short dramas in the same vertical format, so the table captures the filings and ignores the content.
| App | Publisher shown in the store listing | Launch | Installs on Google Play | What is notable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NetShort | NETSTORY PTE. LTD. | July 22, 2024 | 100M+ | Third worldwide on downloads in Q1 2026, per Sensor Tower numbers |
| FlexTV | YUDER PTE. LTD. | October 2022 | 10M+ | Longest-running app in this group |
| MoboReels | CHANGDU (HK) TECHNOLOGY LIMITED on iOS; MOBOREADER TECHNOLOGY USA on Google Play | June or July 2023, depending on the store | 10M+ | A single app under two publisher names |
| Kalos TV | Storyverse Co., Limited | September 2023 | 5M+ | The smallest app here; the repeated Kuaishou link is unverified |
| TopShort | Han Book Pte. Ltd., developer name JoyHunter | June 2023 | Not reported; confirmed on iOS only | Novels and drama under one app |
| FreeReels | Kunlun Tech | Not reported | Not reported | First in the world on downloads in Q1 2026, based on Sensor Tower numbers |
| GreatShort | Intelligent Journey Inc | Not reported | 10M+ | Bills itself as free of subscriptions |
NetShort
A second layer probably does not fit NetShort at all. The publisher on Google Play is NETSTORY PTE. LTD., with the store page showing a release date of July 22, 2024. So it is younger than DramaBox, ShortMax and My Drama. Even so, it has reached the 100M+ install band, the band shared with ReelShort and DramaBox. Ranked third worldwide by downloads in Q1 2026 by Sensor Tower, it carries the most solid third-party number on this page. What it lacks is a matching place in the revenue tables, in which DramaBox and ReelShort sat level at about $140M each that three-month stretch. Downloads and money run as separate competitions, and NetShort is currently winning one of them.
FlexTV
Being the old hand here, FlexTV gets less notice than its age deserves. The developer on both store listings is YUDER PTE. LTD., and both point to an October 2022 debut. About two months after ReelShort and half a year before DramaBox, in other words. The 10M+ bucket is where its download count sits, a full band below NetShort. Plainly, a head start in this market has not been worth much on its own. FlexTV reads as a stable drama app rather than a growing one, so four years of amassed episodes is its real selling point.
MoboReels
Pinning MoboReels down is the slowest job here. CHANGDU (HK) TECHNOLOGY LIMITED is the App Store seller, while MOBOREADER TECHNOLOGY USA is the name on Google Play. So a single app carries two corporate names across two legal territories. Split naming is not a warning sign by itself, since it is widespread in this category, but it does rule out the developer line as a snap identity check. The stores also disagree on the debut, which falls in June or July 2023. Its install band is 10M+, the band it shares with FlexTV and GreatShort. Note which store took your money if you download it, because refund requests go to Apple or Google rather than to one firm.
Kalos TV
The smallest app here is Kalos TV, which sits in the 5M+ band. Its developer is Storyverse Co., Limited, and both stores date the debut to September 2023, the month ShortMax arrived. What the store pages leave out is the interesting part. Many write-ups call it a Kuaishou project, and its Android package name carries a kw prefix that readers treat as evidence. Neither store listing confirms any link to Kuaishou, and I could not verify one from a primary source. Any article that states it flatly warrants skepticism, because a fragment of a package name is a hint and not a chain of ownership.
TopShort
TopShort stands out, because iOS is the only place I could confirm it exists. Han Book Pte. Ltd. is the App Store vendor of record, JoyHunter is the developer name and the debut is given as June 2023. The pitch is novels and drama together, which puts it in the same tradition as GoodShort. That combination is the reason to try it. If you already follow episodic web fiction, the catalog logic and the source material behind the adapted series will be familiar. I have no Google Play band for it, so I am not going to extrapolate its size from a single store.
FreeReels
FreeReels carries the best top-line number on this page and the thinnest documentation behind it. First globally by downloads in Q1 2026, per Sensor Tower, which puts it ahead of everything else here and ahead of the five famous apps. The owner is Kunlun Tech, the group behind DramaWave, which Media Partners Asia credits with about 13% of the microdrama market outside China. So a single company owns the download leader and a top-five revenue app at once. That is worth remembering whenever this market is presented as a two-horse race. I recorded no launch date or download band for it, so open the store page and read the purchase list yourself.
GreatShort
Intelligent Journey Inc publishes GreatShort as a real Android app, and Google Play puts it in the 10M+ band. Its pitch is uncommon, since the store description says the app is free, with “no subscription and no hidden fees”. That is the developer’s own claim in its own store listing, not a finding I confirmed by taking an account through a full series. The in-app purchase area of the store page is the first place to probe it. Monetization changes here without notice, so a copy written in September 2026 is a snapshot rather than a promise. For anyone who declines to leave a weekly pass running, GreatShort is the clear first stop if the assertion holds up.
The Names Worth a Look
Ranked on what the store pages support, NetShort is the first install, with the size and the published ranking to back up it. Second on the same logic is FreeReels, which also has a parent outfit with a real record in the category. FlexTV lands third, and I would open it to graze rather than to follow a new release. For iOS users who read web novels, and only for them, TopShort earns a place, because the combined catalog is a real difference. Kalos TV and MoboReels read as unremarkable apps, and their own store listings give no reason to pick them over the larger ones. Ten minutes with GreatShort will show whether its no-subscription claim holds up to contact with a paywall. Anyone who simply wants to watch dramas online without a new download is still better served by the five major apps and their official channels.
Where the Name Is the Only Real Thing About It
In this rung the remaining trouble comes from search, not from software. Phrases that look like brands are frequently only misspelled guesses, and real short, reel shorts and realshort all resolve to ReelShort, printed by New Leaf Publishing. Two others now land somewhere real, because great short as two words reaches GreatShort and free reel reaches FreeReels. A dead-end search can turn into a live result as new apps debut, and that is how the wrong download happens. Store search does not protect the short tv style of title either, and several separate developers publish near-identical names. MoboReels is the opposite case, one real app under two publisher names, and TopShort is a third, an iOS-only app leaving an Android blank other titles fill. The fix takes five seconds: ignore the icon, read the publisher entry, check the install band, and open the in-app purchase list before deciding that a shorts app is the one you wanted.
